The Rotary Club of Lancaster Penn Square wielded the fastest scissors in the county when they cut reflective tape and Velcro for the Amish vest project. Amish and Plain children in Lancaster County ride self-propelled scooters on the side of the country roads and need to be more visible to drivers. Child size vests are not an easily purchasable item, so the club partnered with a Penn State Extension program to cut vest materials and to pay for reflective strips and Velcro.
We have donated to first time home owners, through Tabor Community Services, basic home owner tools, like hammers, screwdrivers, and flashlights.
Through Rotary District Grants, we have donated kitchen supplies and a mirror for their dance room to The Mix at Arbor Place and supported a summer music program for Music for Everyone. For the North Star Initiative, we donated a washer, dryer and refrigerator for the Harbor which provides a home for female survivors of domestic sex trafficking. With the support of three other Rotary Clubs, we are contributing to building a tiny home for the emergency temporary housing for women and children in crisis.
Weekly we contribute to our ongoing project for the Lancaster County food bank…. by asking our members for “a can every week”. Also weekly, we donate a book to the Children’s section of the Lancaster Library to thank the speakers who have volunteered their time to address our club.
For the environment and beautification of Lancaster City we have planted trees, picked up trash, planted more trees, painted trash container, and planted even more trees! We have also provided vertical sewer grates to prevent debris from going into the Chesapeake Bay.
We have braved the cold to ring the bell for the Salvation Army for “the sound of a warm meal a safe place to sleep and a brighter Christmas for millions in need”.
On the global level, we have donated money, raised from an auction of commemorative District Conference glasses, to the Nepal Earthquake Relief. We have given money to Rotary International for a matching grant to provide new eye glasses and eye care to the disadvantaged in Honduras. Several of our members have participated in overseas missions to build a cistern in Haiti, participate in polio immunization in Cuba and Ethiopia, and provide new eye glasses and eye care in various countries.
